January 2011. White-tailed Eagles shooting in Hungarian puszta.

This blog of mine should have been exactly about this, about informing my respected colleagues (and other potential persons interested) what and where I photo, what was it there like and so on...

In fact, this is an opportunity to show few photos of mine, without overloading the gallery.
Partly of laziness and (not insignificantly) partly of me being shy, I haven't done so.

After I returned from Hungary, few photographers called me or texted and emailed me, to tell them what was it there like, and they wanted to see some pictures. All this persuaded me to create this photoblog.

Situation
Place: Hortobagy, Hungary
Time: January
Aims: White-tailed Eagle, on the snow, fighting for food in winter

I wasn't the first and supposedly not the last photographer to be there, of course.
See for example web of Mr. Miroslav Zítek, and others. But some of the information I list here might be useful or even pleasing for somebody.
So: I went to Hungary, to Hortobagy location, several kilometres from a little town of Balmazujváros. . I photographed Eagles (along with my colleague Lada Vit) from a hide let by the Sakertour company.

What to take with you? I shot with Nikon D3s (full frame), lens Nikon 400/f2.8, Nikon 70-200/f2.8. For more distant or smaller objects I took the teleconverters TC 2 a TC 1.4.
Restrictions: If there is something to photo, you can shoot practically all day. The shelter is North-North-Eastern orientated. In this time of year (January) the light is nice circa from 8 to 9-9.30 AM and 2.30 to 3.30 PM. Afterwards there isn't enough light for an action photo. I used ISO 6400 and even 12800 out of sheer despair. The Eagles came mostly late in the afternoon. Eventual snow or at least white frost can help a lot, though. Eagles' appearance and behaviour at the locality is highly dependent on the weather.
The shooting is done through a "mirror" glass with significant calorific effect. It tones one or one and a half the aperture down. It goes foggy.

I went to Hungary in January, because I wanted to photo Eagles on snow. The snow melted a week before my arrival, of course

White-tailed Eagle

The magpies were very daring. They edged to an Eagle from behind, keeping a low profile. This happened only when the Eagle wasn't eating. The magpies acted like they were searching for something on the ground, and then suddenly they pulled the Eagle's tail feathers. And at once they whooshed to a safe distance.

Then the fog fell. To my surprise not only on the location where I was, and that would've been exactly what I expected, but also on half of Hungary and Slovakia.

White-tailed Eagle

How typical. Instead of landing proudly... It came running, after few hours of hesitation, like a hen.

White-tailed Eagle

And when it finally took off, it flew four and a half metres.

The freezing dense fog created white frost. Visibility 10 - 12 metres.

Whole fish lying a little bit further…

When I'm sitting in a hide for many hours without anything happening, I often fall asleep. Usually that is the time for something to happen.

White-tailed Eagle

Almost all of the Eagles weren't adults yet. The difference between an adult and young (not fully grown) is quite obvious, including the big difference in size.

Zdravím, jelikož mne tato lokalita také moc zajímá, bylo možné ještě písnout pár řádků s jakou technikou tam má vubec jezdit. Podle mlhy, bych řekl že se fotí i dost na vysoká ISA, atd.
